Quadratisch, praktisch, unverzichtbar: Anfang Januar 2010 ist die erste Ausgabe des Reggae-Magazins „Irie Up“ erschienen. Gedruckt wird es in Berlin, geschrieben in der ganzen Welt von Leuten, die aus der Soundsystem-Szene kommen. Was „Irie Up“ besonders macht, wer dahinter steckt und wie du das Magazin bekommst, erzählt Initiator Ronan Lynch im Interview.

What makes Irie Up different from other reggae magazins?

Ronan Lynch: Well, it’s brand new! The magazine is in English, for an international audience. Irie Up comes out of soundsystem culture, which is slowly growing worldwide. It’s clear that there are small reggae and dub scenes around the world, but they are very disconnected. We noticed this and decided that we could be a link in this movement, because there’s a real thirst to know about soundsystem culture.

Who are the authors and who is working with you?

Ronan Lynch: It’s an international project, which was founded by Ronan Lynch and Paula Strzelecka. The design team is based in Berlin and Warsaw, and the writers are from all over. Jacques Golub of the reggae label Kingston Connexion is French editor, and Ali Horton is UK editor. A lot of the writers also run soundsystems, such as Vedran Meniga (Radikal Dub Kolektiv) in Croatia and Dubfadah of LDM Sound from Rome.

Is there a publishing company behind you?

Ronan Lynch: The publisher is Irieland Music, which is an independently-owned label and soundsystem based in Berlin.

Please tell me more about the first issue.

Ronan Lynch: The first issue is January/February 2010. The readership is between 5,000 and 10,000, and the first issue is available in fourteen different countries. It’s mainly on sale through soundsystems and reggae clubs, also in some record and bookshops. It’s already on sale in Russia, Poland, Germany, France, Holland, UK, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, New Zealand Japan, USA, Canada and Brazil.

How much is the Irie Up magazine and how often will Irie Up be published annually?

Ronan Lynch: € 3.95, it’s published every two months.

Do you offer a subscription?

Ronan Lynch: Yes, there’s a good offer for German residents, a one-year subscription including delivery for €20.

“Irie Up“ Ausgabe 1, Review

Die Welt ist voller Reggae und hier ist endlich ein Magazin, das sich nicht nur um die Dancehall-Hypes und Artist aus Jamaika kümmert. Die internationalen Autoren schreiben über Reggae in Irland, Brasilien, Italien, Kroatien, Polen, Neuseeland und Deutschland. Was sie zu sagen haben, passt meist auf eine Seite und ist kurzweilig zu lesen.

In der Rubrik „Reggaetown“ wird die Reggae-Geschichte einer Stadt aufgearbeitet. Den Anfang macht natürlich Berlin. Dazu gibt es sehr interessante Interviews mit dem mir bisher unbekannten Calman Scott und Errol Arawak, dem Gründer des King Earthquake Soundsystem aus UK. Außerdem bietet „Irie Up“ Fotos und einige Reviews. Übrigens: Alle Texte sind in englischer Sprache verfasst.

Das „Irie Up“-Magazin kommt im praktischen Format 21 x 21 cm und ist 40 Seiten stark. Dank des hochwertigen, dicken Papiers wirst du lange deine Freude daran haben. Ein weiterer Grund, weshalb du gut auf dein „Irie Up“ aufpassen sollest: Die Texte gibt es nur gedruckt und nicht im Internet.
